Description
Have you ever visited a museum inside a house? Come with us to one of the most fascinating and underrated museums of Madrid: the Cerralbo Museum, located inside the estate of the Marquis of Cerralbo!
History
This house-museum used to be the home of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, Marquis of Cerralbo, and his family. The building itself, constructed using Neo-Baroque and Rococo elements, is very impressive, but the collection inside is what really dazzles. The Marquis was fascinated by the arts and sciences, so his impressive collection includes paintings, coins, clocks, tapestries, porcelain objects, and much more. Works by renowned European artists such as El Greco, Francisco de Zurbarán, and Jacopo Tintoretto are featured as well. The Marquis opened his house as a private gallery in the late 19th century, and after his death in 1922, the Spanish government transformed his residence into the fascinating museum it is today.
